What a day! This was really a highlight for me and for Chris. The sun shone, with a slight cloud cover and gentle breeze- perfect for tennis, and our best weather day yet!We (well, I) perhaps overestimated the girls’ enthusiasm, but hopefully someday they will remember that they got to experience Wimbledon in person.
We started off by finding a cafe at the top of Centre Court that overlooked some of the non-show courts. We got to see some great points from a birds-eye view. After an antipasti and champagne/hot chocolate (depending on age group), we split up....Riley, not yet 5, was not allow
ed into Centre Court. Amory and Chris took the first shift in some amazing seats (thank you Chris and Barclays!). The stadium felt much more intimate than it seems on TV, and you could really see the ball in play. From that vantage we watched Serena Williams play an unseeded Frenchwoman in the first round. What we thought would be a walkover turned into an exciting match, as the underdog plugged away to break Serena and split sets! Between the second and third sets, we switched off again and I got to enjoy watching Serena the champion prevail, and a few early points of Roger Federer’s match. Chris then finished off the Federer sets while the girls went to the Wimbledon store. It might SEEM like we bought cinderblocks with Wimbledon logos, but we were just so excited to be there we couldn’t help our
selves. Chris rescued his biceps and bank account just in time, and together we sampled some strawberries and cream on the lawn. I went back for one last hurrah, deciding to watch a match of 2 unseededs from the front row on court 8....it looked to be a David and Goliath match. A small but speedy Belgian player (Rochus) was down 2 sets to an enormous Frenchman with tons of pace but little finesse. I saw the 3rd set, which Rochus took (ultimately to win the entire match). Not only were his dropshots and spins amazing, but he had an entertaining coterie of friends with colorful hats & painted faces in Belgian colors, plus rowdy cheers between each point.
As the evening approached, we headed back to town for a fish and chips dinner at a local Pub...a perfect end to the day!
